How to Make Friends After Moving to Portland

Welcome to Portland! We’re happy you’re here. Although Portland is a friendly city, moving to any town where you don’t know people is hard.

Master Movers has been a Portland moving company since 1992. We’ve helped thousands of people settle into the Rose City. Here’s some of what we’ve learned about making friends in Portland.

Be a Do-Gooder

Volunteer for a favorite cause. You’ll meet people of similar good heart, feel better about yourself and help others. We’re involved in Move for Hunger. There are other local charitable organizations where you can make a difference to the homeless and hungry. We take pride in being a Portland moving company that cares for the community, and we’re passionate about serving others.

Play Ball!

Join a sports league. Oregon is notorious for outdoor, sporty types. Find a group involved in the sport, game or activity of your choice. Join it. Don’t limit yourself to what you already know. If you’re a regular runner, join a running group but also try something new, such as a disc-golf or an ultimate group.

Collect Names

Dale Carnegie literally wrote the book on making friends. He lived a long time ago, but his advice still rings true: “If you remember my name, you pay me a subtle compliment; you indicate that I have made an impression on you.” No one has said it better. When you meet someone, remember his or her name. The next time you meet, show your interest by addressing your new acquaintance by name. It’s a start!

Work the Water Cooler

Work is a great place to meet people and build friendships. Chances are you work with at least one person you’d enjoy socializing with. If your company does team building events, participate. Go to office happy hours. Sing loudly at office birthday parties. Smile a lot and be a friendly face in the breakroom.

Start Clubbing

Websites like meetup.com make it easy to find social clubs of like-minded people. Are you into classic movies? Like to do crafts? Trying to finish that novel? Chances are, there’s a meetup group with people who share your interests.

Explore Beervana

It’s been said that Portland has more brewpubs per capita than any other U.S. city. Be that as it may, the city has earned its nickname, Beervana, by being home to many great pubs and bars. If you’re the type that enjoys a night out, don’t wait for company. Explore the town’s bar scene, and check out the many special events and theme nights and strike up conversations. Catch a ride home via the city’s public transit system.

Be a Good Listener

The surest way to making friends is to be open to relationships. If you’re reticent, taking an interest in others can pave the way. As Dale Carnegie observed, “You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years of trying to get other people interested in you.”
